Private House

Bergamo - Italy - 1995
The site for the villa is atop a hill in the wooded landscape surrounding Bergamo, Italy.
The main residence is a based on a square plan: the night area is arranged within a single storey L-shaped building with a lean-to roof; the day area is a higher tower occupying the centre and reminiscent of the traditional lookout towers once scattered along the paths of migratory birds. The two volumes are connected and separated by
a visible circulation spine covered by its own transparent roof and projecting the inner pathways of the house directly into the landscape.
The result is an architecture both familiar and new, where the patio of a courtyard typology is transformed into a massive tower accommodating the house’s living area and linking it to the attractive landscape beyond.
The entire building – terraces and retaining walls – is covered with a pink local stone, placing the new building even more firmly in the landscape.
