The project for the renovation and new coordinated image for the line 1 of the Milan metro system is the result of the winning entry of a 1997 national competition.
The competition was aimed at rethinking the design and layout of all of the station’s mezzanine levels in order to resolve problems connected with security, accessibility, environmental quality and the profitability of the retail spaces.
The work hypothesis has focused on the strategic elements of the intervention: the redesign of the exits with the covering of the stairways and the abolishment of all architectural barriers; the distributive clearness of spaces, with legible walkways, clear graphic signals, visibility of filter and control areas; the redesign of the lighting and furniture systems, with a detailed research of technological appliances able to guarantee efficiency and a energy saving.
