Massimo De Carlo art gallery

Milano - Italy - 1992
An industrial building located in the interior courtyard of an early-century Milanese residential block was converted into an art gallery, emptying it of any machinery and non-bearing wall in order to enhance its existing volumes.
The gallery is composed of a main exhibition room, almost square in plan, covered by a seven meters high vault, hosting large-scale artworks such as site-specific installations, and a secondary space, with a new mezzanine, an intimate setting for more traditional artworks.
The space was remodeled leaving just a few essential elements exposed to view: the curved prefabricated concrete load-bearing structure of the main space, the two skylights, one for each room, and the large iron-framed windows; new interventions were limited to air-conditioning ducts and the zinced supporting structures for the new lamps.
The walls are uniformly white, and the floor has been covered in light-colored wood.
