Pinacoteca di Brera

Joint project with Gregotti Associati
Milan - Italy - 1983

Renovation of the Raphael Room. Brera Museum, Milan, Italy.
With Gregotti & Associates, responsible for general project.
The project stresses the relationships between art and its environment: here space adapts to the three great art works on display.
This is unadorned, extremely simple architecture in which light defines volume.
The full-length cut along the ceiling makes overhead lighting possible, while theskylight in the false ceiling above the Piero della Francesca altar piece seems to become a ray light projected downwards.
The surfaces – the extremely light paving of the floor and the white stucco walls, for example – enhance the penetration of light. Discreet, subtle features like the reveals and plinths, round slender protective rails and metal wall edging testify to the architects’ attention to detail that places them in the line of Italian masters running from Franco Albini to Carlo Scarpa.
