Expansion of the Deutsche School of Milan
Milan - Italy - 2004

The open air space and the patrimony of its living trees represent the great resource of the German school, located in the centre of Milan.
Main objective of the project is the conservation of both the musts and the playground.
The announcement of the competition requested the realisation of a new polyfunctional complex with a seven departments nursery school, dining hall and gymnasiums.
The new building is connected to the old one by a bridge created on the first level, and, for the loading and unloading operations, it is accessible from the court of the school, too.
The new construction holds the headship and the assistants areas. On the same floor there are the gymnasium and the changing rooms, reachable both directly from the school, through the bridge, and from the nursery school making use of the stairway. The staircase reaches the buried level, too, where are forty parking places with a leading ramp from via Legnano.
The materials chosen give to the city a quite neutral building, but inserted in the surrounding environment, while the inner part privileges transparencies.
The façades are covered with wood and glass, the light green colouring of which varies depending on the overlooking.
The external flooring will be created using grey asphalt and red washed concrete, this one also used for the sport field area. Metallic grilles will be placed all around the trees as well as circular wooden benches. The two courts are grass paved with a grass-parquet fillet winding the building.
The range of the materials chosen for the inside spaces is selected following criterias allowing the outmost maintenance, security and hygienic degree as possible. The floor is grey PVC and emphasises both the colouring of the different departments and quality of the wooden parts; the dining hall will have a shaped block flooring; the inside walls will be light and made out of wood.
