Implementation of the "Brooktorhafen" bridge
2004 - Hamburg, Germany

The peculiar proportion of this bridge located in HafenCity is the most significant feature of this project. The four-lane road that crosses the canal makes this structure into an almost square slab that – more than performing a typical bridging function – establishes a certain continuity of the road.
The wealth of design derives from these abnormal proportions.
The structural solution, which is obtained through an asymmetric pier plunging into the water, generates a sort of pedestrian tunnel which is protected along the docks and that reduces the light of the bay.
The profile of the bridge is thus virtually turned upside down: the plasticism of its design is enhanced by a beautifully studied lighting concept under the structure and on the water while the extrados of the bridge-beams – which can only really be seen in the plan, with minimal light built into the signs on earth -   stands out from the urban plan thanks to the slices of lit crystal that protect pedestrian crossings.
