New square "Michele Alboreto" in Rozzano
Milan - Italy - 2006
|
The project for the new Piazza Michele Alboreto, at the center of the residential neighborhood that has developed on the former Romagnoli area in Rozzano, near Milan – originally planned to contain a market – covers a considerable portion of urban space, with an area of about 8000 m2 (90 x 90 meters).
The large open space is surrounded by porticoes and residential buildings that contain shops on the ground level. For this reason, a street for vehicles has been included, in Serizzo, a very strong gray stone, to permit automobiles to reach the shops and to park nearby for limited time periods.
The piazza is divided into two separate zones. In the central part, in red terracotta, linden and acacia trees form a shady green zone where elderly people and young mothers with children can linger and relax. The open part, on the other hand, with an oval footprint, is a meeting place for all generations, a space with benches positioned near low lighting fixtures that create a sensation of comfortable, more limited zones.
On the side along Via Toscana a dune has been inserted, which functions to attenuate the noise and the view of the traffic.
In the open zone, not far from the area with the benches, a small building stands, with an elliptical form, in steel and glass, containing an information point on services for local residents.
The design of the piazza, in keeping with the traditional architecture of Italian squares, is light, legible and contemporary, like the small building it contains. The priorities are functional quality and spaciousness, to generate total livability for this urban place in the suburbs of Milan.
