Project for a private house at Sagaponac
Long Island - New York - 2002

The client suggested the idea of designing the house from the inside out, making the kitchen the centre and designing the rest of the house around this core.
A perimeter wall defines the inhabited portion of the site by bending around the house with a variety of earth movements. The level of the terrain rises and drops with varying degrees of privacy afforded to different areas of the house.
The public rooms and the entrance pathway are organized on the ground floor around a small central courtyard.
The barrier between living spaces and the courtyard is made of wood panels alternating with glass where natural light is required, such as in the kitchen and the entrance lounge.
The entrance lounge overlooks the pool and the outdoor terrace, which is situated approximately two feet below grade and functions as the domesticated portion of the garden. The second floor houses three bedrooms and a guest room, all facing the sunken pool or the garden that is planted on the roof of the garage.
