Lurago Marinone - Italy - 1995
When the client asked Citterio and Partners to work on this project, the building was already partly completed.
The main structure and partitions of the building had already been built according to a design by the Swiss architect Rudy Hunziker.
After considering both the site and the existing plan – a combination of an enclosed geometry of simple boxes and the “Miesian” openness of free-standing walls – Citterio and Partners decided to enhance this latter feature, revealing and emphasizing the sense of unbroken continuity between exterior and interior space, and the tight sequence of inner rooms and patios.
The ground floor, neutral and open to terraces and garden, is a gallery-like space where architecture becomes a pure backdrop for a displaying art.
The client’s bedrooms occupy the first floor, and then guest rooms and communal areas are in the basement.
