Aspesi’s factory had to resemble a farm as much as possible; the foundation of the building, faced in solid brick but leaving apertures rather like the air holes for a granary, actually behaves like a large service building. The top, with its ribbon windows which open in the concrete panels with projecting sun-shading tiles, recalls the shape of German 1930s metal industries, strictly designed according to a rationalist modern approach, but were built using traditional materials.
Rather than suggesting technology, the intention was for the building to show a formal rigour and ability to satisfy the needs that are the acknowledged values of the brand.
Around the building, there was an industrial district of which the building itself was the final part: two sides of the plant look onto a dense wood where building is not allowed, separating this area from the motorway.
The view on the wood and the continuity of the operational rooms on the first floor are at the core of the design of the offices: a 15m wide ring runs around the perimeter containing the administration, sales, and logistics departments and the creative R&D area for collections.
An open space of about 800 square metres, with a floor in larch, uses glass panels to make private offices that all look onto the trees.
The ring on the first floor looks onto a sort of internal court from which the production area on the ground floor takes its natural light. This is how the continuity of the interiors is guaranteed between the different areas of activity of the company.
