Vitra - Manufacturing and administration complex

Neuenburg - Germany - 1992
This 6,000 sq mt “hangar” is built with the same light, ecological materials, as the aluminium sandwich panels, used for chairs. The general structure of the building is made of steel pillars and beams (30 meters long) covered by a zinc sheeted roof. The architects attempted to blend the building into its surroundings by including features of Lower German rural architecture in their modern design.
Thus, the flat zinc-sheeted canopy resting on massive V-shaped wood supports resembles the roof structures of local German barns.
Inside, the workshops laid out under the imposing steel structure have full-height 8 meter windows which bring the surrounding countryside into the factory.
The emphasis is very much on natural lighting, with daylight from the windows supplemented by indirect natural light from the skylights arrayed just inside the external supporting structure.
