Via Lomazzo 52 was the headquarters of Sole 24 Ore. This newspaper has moved its editorial staff and offices into a new building designed by Renzo Piano. The project calls for the complete replacement of the existing construction, in a prevalently residential neighborhood enlivened by the axis of Via Procaccini/Corso Sempione. The old semi-industrial building is replaced by a complex of two volumes entirely set aside for apartments, located at the back of a new private courtyard that is protected yet visible from Via Lomazzo, landscaped with greenery and featuring a large pool that reflects the new facades in natural stone. The range of residential types and sizes is highly varied: the urban villas with gardens of the Garden Building, 6 storeys high, with its main facade overlooking the internal garden toward Via Tartaglia; the penthouses with their three-storey loggias in the Tower Building, with a height of 17 storeys. The architectural design is discreet and elegant, in continuity with the research of Milanese rationalism, to interact with nearby excellent examples of modernism designed by Bottoni, Terragni and Vietti on Corso Sempione. Overall, the project calls for construction of 66 residential units and 227 garages in the parking area. The architectural details and finishes are of great quality, like the glass mosaic that covers the elegant grid of the facade, specially designed and produced for this project. Great attention has been paid to construction quality, energy savings and other aspects of environmental compatibility. Via Lomazzo is located in a central zone, in a dense, commercial urban environment. Nevertheless, the project area contains a garden that has existed for thirty years, with an area of about 3000 m2, inside the block, faced by the new apartments of the six-storey building. From the upper levels of the tower, residents can enjoy a 360° view, from the historical center of the city to the Alps.
