An American clothing firm decided to install its Italian head offices in an old coffee factory, a 3,000 square meters industrial complex of a small buildings with gabled tiled roofs and small courtyards.
The original volumes were preserved and the foundations and supporting structure left untouched because of strict planning regulations.
Everything else was changed, from the façades and glass roofs to the open floors, staircases and access ramps. Citterio “brutalized” the architecture with basic elements, but applied a profusion of discreet sophisticated detail.
The volumes are pierced by huge windows which let daylight in, elements like the lighting galvanized steel staircases and catwalks, exterior cement finishes, waxed concrete floors and perforated sheet metal partition walls combine with well-lit design studios whose light wood floors and desks create a warm atmosphere.
